BUSHFIRE ATTACK LEVEL - 29 TO FLAME ZONE

High to Extremely High Risk

 BAL-29, BAL-40, and BAL-FZ (Flame Zone) demand strict compliance with comprehensive bushfire building regulations under AS 3959. 

BAL-29 (High Risk)

  • Heat threshold: Radiant heat exposure up to a maximum of 29 kW/m².
  • Primary threat: Significantly increased risk of heavy airborne ember attacks.
  • Building impact: Extensive construction upgrades required compared to lower-tier ratings.

BAL-40 (Very High Risk)

  • Heat threshold: Radiant heat exposure ranging from 29 kW/m² up to 40 kW/m².
  • Primary threat: Extreme ember attack paired with a likelihood of direct flame contact.
  • Building impact: Strict material restrictions designed to withstand structural ignition.

BAL-FZ / Flame Zone (Extremely High Risk)

  • Heat threshold: Radiant heat exposure risk baseline matches BAL-40 (exceeds 40 kW/m²).
  • Primary threat: Full, direct exposure to the main fire front and sustained flame contact.
  • Building impact: Most severe building regulations, often requiring specialized fire shutters or flame-rated materials.

External water spray systems act as a critical defensive barrier for high and extreme-risk properties!

While building standards focus on passive structural resistance, active water systems lower extreme external temperatures and prevent structural failure under intense heat.

1. Temperature Reduction & Flame Deflection

  • Cools external surfaces: Continuous water application prevents the cladding, roofing, and window frames from reaching ignition temperatures.
  • Deflects direct flames: The water barrier creates a thermal cushion that can deflect and absorb direct flame contact experienced in BAL-40 and Flame Zone conditions.
  • Blocks radiant heat: A dense water curtain absorbs high radiant heat flux, reducing the energy that hits the building envelope from up to 40+ kW/m² down to survivable levels. 

2. Window and Glazing Shielding

  • Prevents thermal shock: High-pressure spray prevents the outer panes of toughened safety glass from cracking under rapid temperature spikes.
  • Protects seals and frames: Keeps window seals, gaskets, and framing materials cool, preventing them from melting or warping and allowing embers inside.

3. Embers and Fuel Suppression

  • Douses intense ember attacks: Heavy water flow instantly extinguishes large, wind-driven embers and burning debris before they can accumulate.
  • Creates a wet buffer zone: Saturates adjacent decks, stairs, and property perimeters, eliminating spot fires that could otherwise breach the home. 

4. Critical Design Rules for High-Risk Zones

  • Automated activation: Systems in BAL-40 and Flame Zone should ideally feature automated or remote activation, as conditions will be too dangerous for manual start-up. 
  • Stainless steel and copper only: All exposed piping, brackets, and nozzles must be metal to withstand direct flame contact. Poly or PVC lines will melt instantly.
  • Independent water reserves: A large, dedicated concrete or steel static water tank with a diesel-powered pump is mandatory, as main grids and electricity will fail.

Uninterrupted Water Supply

 High and extreme BAL properties (BAL-29 to Flame Zone) require a reliable, independent water supply to survive severe bushfires. 

Mains town water pressure drops rapidly or fails completely during a major fire emergency, making an on-site system mandatory. 

The Gold Standard Configuration

  • Primary system: A heavy-duty, dedicated diesel or petrol firefighting pump paired with a large Static Water Supply (SWS), such as a concrete or steel tank, swimming pool, or dam.
  • Key advantage: Delivers the high water pressure and flow rates required to supply multiple high-volume sprinkler networks and structural hand-held fire hoses simultaneously.

Maximising Multi-Zone Control

  • Utilise all pump outlets: Fit high-quality brass or stainless steel control valves to every discharge port on your pump.
  • Strategic water diversion: Manually or electronically route water to your Inner Zone (e.g., roof and eave drenchers), Outer Zone (e.g., yard saturators), or Hand-held Fire Hoses based on the real-time threat.
  • Resource management: Shut down inactive zones using the valves to maintain critical system pressure and extend the life of your static water reserves during a long ember attack.

Recommended for the Inner Zone

The Aussie Drencher, Drencher Head and Static Nozzles are optimized for the Inner Zone to create a continuous protective water shield around your home.

1. Aussie Drencher & Drencher Head

  • Zonal designation: Recommended for inner structural protection.
  • Primary function: Designed specifically to produce a dense, protective shield of water.
  • Throw distance: Delivers 15 metres of total spray coverage.
  • Flow rate & pressure: Consumes 4 litres per minute (LPM) at an ultra-low 100 KPa static pressure. 

2. Static Nozzles (180° / 360°)

  • Spray patterns: Available in 360-degree full-circle or 180-degree half-circle directional options.
  • Throw distance: Delivers up to 6 metres of concentrated spray coverage.
  • Flow rate & pressure: Consumes 8 litres per minute (LPM) at a standard 350 KPa pressure threshold.
  • Best use case: Ideal for target-wetting walls, windows, and perimeter decks.

Recommended for the Outer Zone

Impact sprinkler heads are highly recommended for the Outer Zone to saturate your yard and establish a critical fire buffer zone.

1. Aussie Soaker or 1/2" Impact

  • Zonal designation: Recommended for outer property boundaries and yards.
  • Sprinkler head type: Fitted with a 15mm brass impact head.
  • Throw distance: Delivers up to 15 metres of heavy water coverage.
  • Flow rate & pressure: Consumes 15 litres per minute (LPM) at a standard 350 KPa pressure threshold.

2. Aussie Saturator or 3/4" Impact

  • Zonal designation: Recommended for maximum-range perimeter wetting.
  • Sprinkler head type: Fitted with a 20mm heavy-duty brass impact head.
  • Throw distance: Delivers a wide 30 metres of total spray coverage.
  • Flow rate & pressure: Consumes 30 litres per minute (LPM) at a standard 350 KPa pressure threshold.
  • Best use case: Ideal for penetrating high convective bushfire winds to soak surrounding vegetation.
